Jijiga, July 12, 2021 – For more than centuries, Somalis have been under Ethiopian occupation. There is really no one in the world who accepts colonialism, so Somalis have expressed their opposition to a war against Ethiopian colonialism, with wars sometimes halting and sometimes speeding. The only thing Somalis were fighting for in Ethiopia was to control their land freely, while Ethiopia’s ambition was and still is to enslave the Somali people to their land to take advantage of the vast resources of the Ogaden.

Amhara’s colonial ambitions have always existed, but the colonial aspirations of the Amhara empire came true when they sided with colonial allies at the Berlin Conference of West Europe in 1884. King Menelik, wrote a letter to the Berlin Conference asked Europe to give Ethiopia a share, the Ogaden was the place that King Menelik requested.

Explaining in short the history of Ahmara, Somali president Mohamed Siad Bare said “There is no problem other than the Amhara in the Horn of Africa.” “Amhara has always been a colony, and will continue to be a colony.”

When we talk about colonialism, if we use the name Ethiopia in general, I feel that I am insulting other ethnic groups that the Amharas have enslaved more than the colonized Somalis. In order to understand historical facts of the Horn of Africa for people who do not really know, especially history of Ethiopian colonial culture, we use the name Amhara instead of Ethiopia when talking about colonialism in the Horn of Africa.

According to history books on the slave trade in the Horn of Africa, the Amhara dynasty was the forerunner. Slavery from the Horn of Africa served three purposes: prostitution, slave labor demanded by Arab monarchs, and the Arab slave trade to Europe. Kings of Arabia enjoyed watching naked bodis of girls from the Horn of Africa with a beautiful chocolate-color and having breasts with black niples.
The African slave trade greatly affected the various ethnic groups in the Horn of Africa in the 16th century, especially the communities of the Nilotic Pagan in South Sudan and Sumale (Somali).

When these tribes were captured and forcibly subjugated to the Ahmara monarchy without rights, they became the servants of the Amhara royal family. Numerous of children adopted and many people took as servents were made into Amhara to increase population of Amhara.

All the conquered ethnic lands were settled by the Amhara people who ruled the tribes who belonged extended settlement increased under controlled territories of the kingdom. The educated or employed were forced to become the Amhara kingdom as others were seen as inferior and despised as “garbage Somalis.”
The pain and mistreatment of the Amhara kingdom by other ethnic groups, if we talk about it more, will create emotional of hatred and havoc to Amhara people today.

Today, there is an unmistakable phenomenon that Ethiopia is on the path to destruction and disintegration. This opportunity requires a united Somali today, in line with the decision of other ethnic groups in Ethiopia, who are preparing to form their own independent states. Like Oromo form an interim administration, and Tigray controls its own territory.
