Somaliland And Puntland Trade Accusations as Fighting Breaks Out in Sanaag Region

 

Jijiga, February 26, 2020 – Fighting broke out between Puntland and Somaliland Forces in Sanaag region Wednesday with both sides trading accusations.

Somaliland spokesman Abdi Abdullahi Hassan directed blame at Puntland noting its forces attacked Its Sanaag governor leading to fighting.

Hassan said the attack from Puntland side started Tuesday night adding that its forces captured Puntland soldiers.

The number of casualties was not immediately clear.

The fighting broke out in Kadhada which is located 18 kilometres from Yube locality.

However, Puntland claimed it was responding to attacks from its neighbour. It added its side captured 50 soldiers from Somaliland side.

Sources told Somali media portal the fighting erupted after security guards for governors of both sides clashed Tuesday. As a result, the source said both sides called for reinforcements.

Both Puntland and Somaliland contest control of Sool and Sanaag regions.

Puntland and Somaliland fought in 2018 over Tukarag village in Sool region leading to heavy casualties on both sides.
