The delegation arrived in Djibouti on Thursday and conveyed a text message from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Djiboutian President Omar Gelleh. The delegation met with Djiboutian officials last night and discussed ways to end their political ambiguity.

Ethiopia and Djibouti are embroiled in political tensions following an official visit to Djibouti by Egyptian President Al Sisi, who signed a co-operation and defense agreement with President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Ethiopia and Djibouti share economic and social interests, but the Ethiopian government has focused its relations with Eritrea on Eritrea. Eritrea holds territory from Djibouti during the war between the two countries, which is not mediated by IGAD member states.

The delegation led by Ahmed Shide, a Somali national, is a prelude to the arrival in Djibouti of Ethiopian Speaker of the Upper House Aden Farah, who is himself a Somali and a relative of Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Ethiopia has political expertise in managing the political interests of the Somali people and the governments headed by Somali politicians.
