Ethiopia Destroys Eritrea-Backed Rebel groups, Reports say

 

Eritrea-backed-Ethiopian-rebel-groupAccording to Ethiopian officials, 18 “terrorists” who were given military training and armed in Eritrea were killed and captured by the Ethiopian security forces while trying to sneak in to Ethiopia through the Sudanese border. The report said six were killed and 12 of them were captured alive.

In May 2010, Sudan had handed over 48 Ethiopian rebels trained in Eritrea to the authorities in Addis Ababa.  The rebels  were arrested by the Sudanese security forces while they were trying to enter Ethiopia to carry out attacks.

Last week, the government of Ethiopia has accused its neighboring Eritrea for supporting armed groups including Somalia’s terrorist group,  Al Shabaab in planning violent attacks against Ethiopia.

Dina Mufti, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that his country received information of Al-Shabaab planning terror attacks against Ethiopia with the support of the Eritrean government.

Eritrea and Ethiopia fought a border war from 1998 to 2000 that killed 70,000 people, according to the Brussels-based International Crisis Group. The border dispute that caused the war has not been resolved and troops from both sides are still a heavy presence on parts of the divide.
