Eritrean Refugees in Ethiopia to Protest Against Isaias Regime

 

Addis Ababa, April 15, 2011 [ras] – Over 60,000 Eritrean refugees residing in various refugees camps across Ethiopia are to set to protest against the Eritrean government, media news has learned.

Eritrean Refugees Central Committee for Demonstration said the protest is aimed at pressuring the international community to take further action against the Isayas Afeworki’s government.

According to the organizers Committee, the demonstration is intended to be held around Genet Hotel. Similarly, it will also be conducted in all camps where refuges are camped in Ethiopian regions such as Tigray Afar as well as Addis Ababa.

“We Eritrean refugees camping in Shimelba, Maiayni, Berhale and Adiharush Eritrean refugee camps as well as in Addis Ababa as Urban refugees are preparing a peaceful demonstration under the theme “Enough – No more to dictatorship in Eritrean” as part of the demonstration which are planned to be held all over the world by the Eritrean communities in the exile, Kibrom said.

The organizers told that they have sent invitation letter to the major diplomatic missions based in Addis Ababa, including Embassies of  the US, Canada, Switzerland France and others. They also indicated that they have asked for the diplomatic communities to strengthen their actions against the Asmara regime.

“Our reason for this is to condemn the Eritrean regime’s wrong policies over the Eritrean people and its aggressive campaigns against the international community in general and Eritreans and its neighbors in particularly. Moreover, we are calling for international attention to the Eritrean refugee’s plight worldwide,” Kibrom Sibhatu told.

“We want the international community to impose further sanctions and actions to alienates the government from any diplomatic relation,” he added.

Over 1500 Eritrean communities, including over 130 Eritrean refugee students at Addis Ababa University and some 40 students at Africa Health College, are expected to turn out for the demonstration on 20th April, 2011.

Eritrean refugees conducted similar demonstration in Ethiopia in 2007 protesting the deportation of Eritreans from Egypt and Libya.
