Jijiga, Ogadenia, Dec 28, 2021 – Millions of livestock in the Ogaden region are feared to be extinct due to lack of water and pasture following the disappearance of two consecutive rainy seasons.
Since the end of October there has been an increase in livestock deaths following the depletion of water and pasture. Currently, parts of the Ogaden region are reported to be suffering from water shortages and starvation.
Two weeks ago, the Somali regional administration began water trucking in small districts that could not meet the water shortage needs in those districts themselves.
The federal government of Ethiopia is suffering from the effects of the economic collapse and internal displacement caused by the conflict in the north of the country that has been going on for more than a year.
There is no relief from either the Ethiopian federal government or international aid agencies, and without a doubt many people and animals will die of water shortages and starvation in the Somali region by January 2022.
