2 Somalis charged with economic crime

 

indexThe Police Prosecution Unit in Banjul Thursday filed a single count of Economic Crime (specified offences) Act, contrary to Section 5 (b) of Economic Crime against two Somalian nationals at the Banjul Magistrates ‘Court, presided over by Principal Magistrate Hilary Abeke.

The accused persons are Abdirizak Hersi and Faysal Ahmed Jama. According to the particulars of the offence, on or about 12th November, 2013 in the City of Banjul and diverse places without authority, the accused persons were found operating a sim box mini gateway, which caused great economic losses to The Gambia government, thereby committed an offence.

However, the presiding Magistrate transferred the case to the High Court under Section 68 of the Criminal Procedure Code on the grounds that his court lacks the jurisdiction to hear it. He therefore, ordered the accused to be remanded in custody pending futher arrangement.

Corporal Sanyang stood for the IGP, while Lawyer A Sisoho stood for the accused persons.
